The first Lifelong Learning (LLL) Conference was held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston, Jamaica on March 26-27, 2003 under the theme “Lifelong Learning: Time for Action”. There were over 17 presentations made at the Conference, including panel discussions on Lifelong Learning policy issues. The second LLL Conference was held on September 30, 2004 at the Jamaica Conference Centre under the theme “Lifelong Learning – It's All About You”. There were six (6) presenters as well as testimonials by companies, institutions and individuals providing information on ‘best practices in lifelong learning'. The third LLL Conference was rescheduled, due to an active hurricane season, for January 18, 2006 under the theme “Lifelong Learning for Economic Development in the Global Marketplace”. This was held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston, Jamaica. There were four presenters as well as ‘round table discussion' sessions on what should be included in the Lifelong Learning policy. In 2007 we changed the format and moved from having a conference to a Public Forum, which was held on November 15, 2007 at the Emancipation Park in New Kingston under the theme, "Improving Employability Through Lifelong Learning." Guest Speaker was Dr. Leachim Semaj. The Forum featured a live broadcast of the programme "Your Issues Live" on the national station TVJ with host, Michael Sharpe. The fifth LLL Public Forum was also held at the Emancipation Park in New Kingston, under the theme, "Lifelong Learning to the World!" The event saw the following speakers: Dr. Blossom O'Meally Nelson - LLL and Adults in Transition; Steven Kerr, PIOJ - Emerging Trends and Occupations; and Nsombe Jaja - Embracing Change. In 2009, instead of having one public forum, the decision was made to hold three LLL seminars in Kingston, Portmore and Mandeville between June and November 2009. The theme for all three was "Discocering Opportunities Through Lifelong Learning" and featured presentations from guest speaker Dr. Wendel Abel, as well as presentations on LLL and the Labour Market and Accessing Overseas Opportunities Through LLL. Lifelong Learning Regional Youth Forums On March 2, 2005, the Lifelong Learning Focus Group had its first Lifelong Learning Regional Forum targeting students and youths from the parishes of Manchester, St Elizabeth, Trelawny and Clarendon. This was held at the Northern Caribbean University in Mandeville, Manchester. There were five (5) presentations as well as testimonials by companies, institutions and individuals providing information on ‘best practices in lifelong learning'. The second Regional Youth Forum was held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston on January 19, 2006. Youths and students from the parishes of Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, St Thomas and Portland were invited to participate. There were three (3) presentations as well as a motivational speaker to encourage young persons to make use of the opportunities available to them to belong lifelong learners. The fourth Youth Forum was held at the Runaway bay HEART Hotel in St. Ann, on November 6, 2007, under the theme, "Success Through Lifelong Learning." The event featured 3 guest speakers who addressed students from St. Ann, Trelawney, Hanover and Montego Bay. The fifth Youth Forum was held at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston, on November 19, 2008, under the theme, "Lifelong Learning and the Self". The Forum targetted students from across the island. Guest speaker was Betty Ann Blaine, and the event also included other speakers from within the entertainment industry. "Lifelong Learning - Securing Your Future" was the theme of the sixth Youth Forum held November 17, 2009 at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston. Guest Speaker was Mr. Andre Earle, a popular Attorney-at-Law. Other speakers looked at LLL and Sports, as well as LLL and the Performing Arts. The event ended with a fashion show featuring models from HEART Trust/NTA's Garmex institution, who modelled their own designs. |
